If we are what we eat, it’s safe to say that in the running world, we’re only as fast as our shoes can make us. The proper running shoes, tailored to various terrains and your particular foot type, can make all the difference in not just comfort and style, but in building strength as well. Whether you’re a novice runner, a weekend warrior or a full-scale marathon marauder, our list of the best running shoes for men will help you meet your running goals.

What to consider when buying the best running shoes for men

Use

“If you want to find the perfect shoe, you’ve got to ask yourself what you specifically need your shoes for,” says Steve Lemig, director of brand marketing and communications at Road Runner Sports. “Are they for road running? Trail running? Short distance or long distance? Treadmill running? The right solution will vary depending on what you’re using your shoes for.”

Foot type

You also need to know your feet type, says Dr. Daniel Geller, chief medical officer at Kane Footwear. Are your feet pronated (meaning they land inward), neutral (they land with no roll) or supinated (they land outward)?

“These categories will properly help you with support, cushioning and stability,” says Geller. “Also, ask yourself, ‘What are my goals?’ Are you training for a marathon, in which case you’d want a solid daily trainer that supports the impact and longer mileage? Or maybe you’re training for a 10K or 5K? Consider adding in a lighter-weight shoe for tempo and interval runs. Get comfy and cushioned for the longer runs and get lift and snap for the shorter, faster stuff. Efficiency is the name of the game.”

Alternating pairs

When it comes to longevity and performance in the sport of running, foot health is crucial. “As runners, our feet are our foundation,” says Eric Orton, author and running coach at Born To Run World. He reiterates Geller’s advice to own two different pairs of shoes for long and short distances and use them in tandem throughout the week. “Our feet crave stability and feel for the ground, so the closer our feet are to the ground (for short distances), the better we are able to use our feet for stability and strength, which is the holy grail for running health and performance,” he says.

Safety

In addition, factors such as weather and safety measures come into play when choosing the best running shoes. “What is the function of footwear?” asks Ben Le Vesconte, head coach at Vivobarefoot. “To provide grip specific to the terrain and weather protection from different temperatures. We require materials and grip specific to the terrain and temperature at hand.”

How we selected the best running shoes for men

We made our choices with the advice of four very knowledgeable industry experts, consisting of professional runners, coaches and podiatrists. We also conducted extensive research on the latest running shoes technology, various categories of different styles of shoes and their respective functions, as well as sustainability factors that contribute to carbon footprints and emissions. Customer reviews were also heavily considered in our selections.

What are the differences between road and trail running shoes?

According to Lemig, the two biggest differences are the amount of foot protection you get and the tread. “Road running shoes have thin, super-breathable uppers with minimal overlay and toe protection,” he says. “They also have smoother treads and road-specific rubber compounds to better grip flat, paved surfaces. Trail running shoes, on the other hand, often have extra protection built into the toes and heel to protect you from rocks and roots.”

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How often should I replace my running shoes?

“Replace them when the upper becomes undesirable or the outsole wears too thin,” says Orton. “As for the cushion/endurance shoe, there are two considerations: If it’s a trail shoe, you want to replace them when the lugs or treads become too worn to give you the grip and performance you need on trails. Avoid using trail shoes for too much road running, as they will wear much quicker because of the sticky rubber. For roads, I would replace them when the outsole and midsole begin to wear and pack down unevenly, causing a disruption to your foot strike/gait.”

How can I keep my running shoes clean?

Dirty running shoes can cause the material’s quality to decline, so regular cleaning can save your shoes and help them last longer. Plus, they’ll look newer. But, Lemig says, don’t put them in the washing machine! “[It] can damage your shoes’ materials and break down adhesives,” he says. “Not only can the washing machine ruin the shoes, but it can also diminish the support and stability your shoes provide. The best way to clean your running shoes is with a wet rag. If that doesn’t work and they need extra scrubbing, give them a warm bath using mild soap.”

Can I use my running shoes for other activities?

In the same way track shoes are meant for the track, running shoes are meant for running. “Wearing your running shoes for other activities has always been a big no-no for me,” cautions Geller. “Running shoes are designed to support higher impact [activities] and are meant to distribute weight differently than walking or working out, which is why walking in a highly cushioned shoe could make you feel unbalanced. Or in the case of a lighter-weight running shoe, it could be too flimsy to support walking all day.”
