We all remember a time when we wore the wrong shoes to stand around in all day. If you’re like me, you swore you’d never make the same mistake again — no more blisters or pain. With that in mind, I’ve hunted down the best shoes for standing all day and came up with a list of options in various styles, price points and sizes. I also spoke with two podiatrists about what you’ll want to look for in a pair of shoes and how they can improve both the health of your feet and comfort levels.

What to consider when buying the best shoes for standing all day

Materials

Aside from making sure you have the right size shoes, make sure they’re made from high-quality materials. Dr. Elizabeth Daughtry, DPM, FACFAS, a foot doctor in Dunn, North Carolina, says to check the midsole, toe box and upper materials. “In terms of the midsole, look for EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) as it will offer adequate cushioning and shock absorption but also give additional arch support,” she says. “Look out for mesh material for the upper and soft leather material in the toe box area to accommodate for any foot or toe deformities and allow for proper ventilation.”

Design

The design of the shoe needs to be able to provide both support and comfort, which includes having ample arch support. “Proper support means proper alignment,” says Dr. Daniel Geller, DPM, podiatrist and chief medical officer at Kane Footwear. “With proper support, we can avoid things like foot and ankle pain, knee and hip strain or even low back pain.”

Inside the shoe, you’ll want to make sure there is an appropriate level of cushioning. According to Geller, you’ll want a medium to firm cushion system: “Shoes that are too soft may allow our body to follow the path of least resistance, which may not always be a good thing,” he adds.

You’ll also want to consider how breathable your walking shoes or running shoes are for extended wear. “Breathable shoes keep our feet fresh and mitigate moisture,” says Geller. “Moisture increases the likelihood of blisters, chafing and can also lead to pesky foot fungus and malodor.”

Price

Whether they’re weightlifting shoes or shoes for plantar fasciitis, there is no one set price, as they vary by brand and material. Most high-quality shoes generally fall between $100-$200. Shoes with built-in orthotic support or proprietary technology are usually more expensive, but it’s worth the investment since you’re on your feet all day. You may find cheaper options during shopping tentpoles like Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday or Cyber Monday, so you’ll want to keep your eyes peeled.

How we chose the right shoes for standing all day

To find the best shoes for standing all day, I researched multiple different brands on the market, analyzing several types based on user experience and customer reviews. I also consulted with and received professional advice from two podiatrists. My list includes shoes for various sizes, occasions and support levels.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

How do I know if my shoes are suitable for standing all day?

When planning to stand around in shoes all day, make sure they provide a mixture of cushioning and support. “Regardless of the shoes, which are your foundation, many shoes will need additional support via other items such as custom molded orthotics to support your unique foot structure,” says Daughtry. “Look for shoes that have the ability to add additional arch support if the shoes do not offer enough support for your individual foot structure.”

How often should I replace my shoes for standing all day?

Most daily shoe gear will get us through six to 12 months if we’re not too hard on them. Factors such as bad weather can impact the life of a shoe, as can the amount of daily stress they endure. A good rule of thumb is to rotate through a few pairs to keep them fresh and keep your body used to subtle changes in mechanics.

Additionally, midsole health is a determining factor, since it’s a section of the shoe that is greatly utilized during the stance portion of your gait. “This area will quickly wear down even though the overall appearance of the shoe may not give the indication that the shoe is ‘worn down,’” says Daughtry. “To determine the wear on this section of the shoe, turn over the shoe and evaluate for any wrinkling of the material in the midsole area, as this shows that the shock absorption of the shoe has deteriorated.”

Can I wear standing all day shoes for other activities like walking or running?

“In general, walking and running shoes are the ideal style of shoe to plan on wearing all day while working,” says Daughtry. “Many running and walking shoes are made with a cushioned midsole to help with shock absorption, but these types of shoes also generally offer adequate arch support, or the ability to accommodate custom insoles.”

What are the best shoes to wear when working on your feet all day?

The best shoes to wear when working on your feet all day are ones that will provide the most comfort and support. “Many people need to consider the non-skid aspect of a shoe’s sole as well, but in general, most athletic style running shoes are a great option, as this style of shoe typically has more supportive arch support and additional cushioning in the midsole area, to assist with shock absorption during gait,” says Daughtry.
